White House Hints at Upcoming Ukraine Agreement 'this week'
The US believes that Russia is seeking to finalize an agreement to end the conflict, according to Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

President Donald Trump expresses optimism that a peace agreement to resolve the Ukraine conflict could be accomplished within days, as stated by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

While addressing reporters on Saturday, Leavitt emphasized that the Trump administration is committed to rapidly concluding the conflict, which is approaching its fourth year. “The president and his team are very much focused on continuing negotiations with both sides of this war to end the conflict, and the president is very confident [that] we can get it done this week,” Leavitt remarked, though she did not offer additional specifics.

Leavitt indicated that Trump “believes very strongly that Russia is willing to make a deal, and he’s fighting to make a deal.” She also mentioned that National Security Adviser Mike Waltz “is going to be working around the clock all weekend to get a deal and end this conflict in Ukraine.”

When queried about the possibility of a summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin being held in Saudi Arabia or elsewhere, Leavitt declined to provide concrete information. “I don’t have anything to detail or to read out right now,” she stated.

Additionally, Leavitt highlighted that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is engaged in discussions regarding a potential deal that would secure US access to Ukraine’s vital mineral resources. “It will recoup American tax dollars, and it also will be a great economic partnership between the United States of America and for the Ukrainian people as well, as they rebuild their country following this brutal war,” she explained.

The Trump administration is reportedly pursuing a 50% stake in Ukraine’s rare earth mineral deposits, valued at approximately $500 billion, in exchange for ongoing US military and economic assistance. Nevertheless, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed the initial proposal, expressing concerns over the absence of definite security guarantees from the US.

Leavitt’s remarks follow high-level diplomatic discussions between US and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia, aimed at restoring bilateral relations and facilitating a Trump-Putin summit to resolve the Ukraine conflict. Notably, these negotiations did not include Ukrainian or EU representatives.

During the Conservative Political Action Conference on Saturday, Trump declared that he believes “we are pretty close” to finalizing a deal on Ukraine.

Russia has dismissed the idea of merely freezing the conflict, asserting that it seeks a permanent resolution to the crisis. Moscow has indicated that such a resolution might be attainable if Ukraine agrees to neutrality, demilitarization, denazification, and acknowledges the existing territorial realities.
