China discloses findings from 5th national economic census
On Thursday, China released the findings from its fifth national economic census, highlighting the country's economic development and stability over the past five years.

Kang Yi, head of the National Bureau of Statistics, stated during a press conference that the census results indicate a notable rise in both the number of entities and employment in the secondary and tertiary industries. By the end of 2023, China had 33.27 million legal units involved in these sectors, reflecting a 52.7 percent increase since the end of 2018.

The workforce in the secondary and tertiary industries exceeded 428.98 million individuals at the close of 2023, which signifies an 11.9 percent growth compared to five years earlier.

According to the census, there were nearly 88 million self-employed units, providing jobs for 179.56 million people.

Notably, the fifth national economic census integrated the digital economy for the first time.

Kang pointed out that there has been ongoing improvement in technological innovation capacity and labor productivity, along with an optimization of the industrial structure and significant growth in the digital economy.

As of the end of 2023, there were 2.92 million corporate enterprises operating within the core industries of the digital economy, employing 36.16 million people. The annual business revenue for these core digital economy industries totaled 48.45 trillion yuan.

The economic census is a critical national survey that offers a comprehensive perspective on China's secondary and tertiary industries, delivering valuable insights into the country's social and economic progress.

China has previously conducted national economic censuses in 2004, 2008, 2013, and 2018, formally commencing the fifth census in 2023.

To ensure the authenticity and reliability of the census data, Kang explained that a rigorous planning process was established, and quality control measures were enhanced throughout the data gathering process.

A post-enumeration check, which involved sampling 21,000 units across 1,099 enumeration areas and 249 county-level regions from 31 provincial-level regions, revealed a combined error rate of 0.47 percent, which aligns with the established data quality standards.

Based on the findings from the fifth national economic census and information from relevant departments, China revised its gross domestic product for 2023 to 129.4 trillion yuan. This figure marks an increase of 3.4 trillion yuan from earlier estimates, as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics.

China's annual GDP is assessed through two phases: preliminary calculations and final verification, with the latter relying on comprehensive statistical data, final fiscal accounts, and administrative records from various departments.
