Lewandowski Nets Two Goals, Barcelona Defeats Girona 4-1 to Claim La Liga Lead
Barcelona convincingly defeated Girona 4-1 in a Catalan derby on Sunday, with Robert Lewandowski scoring twice in the second half, helping Hansi Flick's team establish a three-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.

With this win, Barcelona accumulated 66 points from 29 matches, and Lewandowski, at 36 years old, added two goals to his tally, bringing his total in the league to 25. This puts him three goals ahead of Kylian Mbappe of Real Madrid.

"I know a lot of people talk about my age, but I work as hard as I did when I was 21, and I want to play for more seasons," Lewandowski said with a smile. "At the moment I'm feeling great physically, and if you look at the numbers, they're the same as they've always been."

Barcelona started the match strongly, with Fermin Lopez and Lewandowski both testing Girona's goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga with early attempts.

Shortly after, Lopez was brought down near the edge of the box, prompting the referee to initially award a free kick to Barcelona. However, after consulting with the Video Assistant Referee, he overturned his decision and instead awarded Girona a free kick, much to the surprise of the home players.

Jules Kounde had a goal ruled out for offside as Girona struggled to cope with Barcelona's advances into their penalty area. Despite this, Gazzaniga made several crucial saves, denying Barcelona multiple times in the first half.

Just before halftime, Gazzaniga could do nothing as Lamine Yamal's free kick was deflected into the net off Girona defender Ladislav Krejci, resulting in an own goal.

After the break, Girona leveled the score against the run of play when they regained possession in midfield, allowing Dutch forward Arnaut Danjuma to curl a shot past Wojciech Szczesny in Barcelona's goal.

Barcelona remained composed and retook the lead shortly after the hour mark when Lopez headed the ball across the box, setting up Lewandowski for an acrobatic finish at the far post.

In the 77th minute, Lewandowski extended the lead to 3-1 following a counterattack. Frenkie de Jong found him in the box, and the Polish striker curled a low shot beyond Gazzaniga.

Ferran Torres, coming off the bench, added a fourth goal when he controlled a pass from the wing with a superb first touch and placed it in the bottom corner. Yamal almost made it five, but his curling shot hit the crossbar.
