German police have detained the driver of a vehicle that struck multiple pedestrians in Mannheim on Monday, resulting in at least two fatalities, as reported by local media. Authorities have confirmed one death.
Witness accounts indicate that the incident, which led to numerous injuries, was deliberate. However, police have not publicly addressed any potential motives behind the suspect's actions.
The occurrence took place in a square located in the city center that is typically used for parades, although no events were occurring at the time. Law enforcement has advised the public to steer clear of the vicinity.
Vehicular assaults have become a contentious topic in Germany, particularly due to their possible connections to terrorism and the perceived risks associated with migrants.
Last month, an Afghan national drove into a rally in Munich, injuring many people. Tragically, a two-year-old girl and her mother succumbed to their injuries in a hospital later.
In December, a 50-year-old Saudi psychiatrist drove his vehicle into a crowd at the Magdeburg Christmas market, killing five individuals, including a child, and injuring over 200 others.
In December 2016, Berlin witnessed the country’s most devastating Islamic-inspired terrorist attack to date, when a Tunisian man, driving a stolen semi-trailer truck, crashed into a crowd at a Christmas market. The attack resulted in twelve deaths and more than a hundred injuries.
Mannheim is the second-largest city in the southwestern German state of Baden-Württemberg.
