BRICS Dismiss Western Sanctions as 'Illegal'
BRICS countries have expressed strong opposition to unlawful politically motivated sanctions that hinder the development of other nations, as stated in a joint declaration from the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia.

The declaration, titled ‘Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,’ spans 33 pages and was published on Wednesday, following a series of multi-format discussions among BRICS leaders.

The declaration emphasizes, “We are deeply concerned about the disruptive effect of unlawful unilateral coercive measures, including illegal sanctions, on the world economy, international trade, and the achievement of the sustainable development goals.”

It further notes that such actions are “inconsistent with rules” of the WTO, undermine the UN Charter, and threaten the multilateral trading system. The sanctions have also been highlighted for their adverse effects on economic growth, energy, health, and food security, worsening poverty and environmental challenges.

Additionally, the declaration points out that these “unilateral coercive measures, inter-alia in the form of unilateral economic sanctions and secondary sanctions that are contrary to international law,” have significant consequences for human rights, particularly the right to development, disproportionately affecting the impoverished and vulnerable populations in targeted countries.

“Therefore, we call for their elimination,” the BRICS statement asserts.

The BRICS member nations have been increasingly strengthening their economic connections and collaboration, despite facing extensive Western sanctions against Russia and the potential for secondary sanctions. The US and its allies have imposed a historically high number of restrictions on Moscow, resulting in the freezing of approximately $300 billion in assets belonging to the Russian state, in addition to sanctions targeting individuals and entities across the energy, metals and mining, and financial sectors.

In response, Moscow has denounced these sanctions as illegal, implementing travel bans on Western officials and signaling intentions for further countermeasures.

Notably, some senior Western politicians and diplomats have admitted the ineffectiveness of the sanctions on Russia, indicating that the possibilities for additional restrictions are diminishing.
