A three-time world champion with the Russian national team, Ovechkin has spent his entire NHL career with the Washington Capitals, who won the Stanley Cup in 2018 with him as a pivotal player. Gretzky, widely regarded as the greatest hockey player in history, accomplished his 894 goals in 1,487 games, while Ovechkin matched this record in just 1,486 games.
During a home game against the Chicago Blackhawks, the 39-year-old Ovechkin scored his 893rd goal to initiate the scoring and later netted his second goal in the third period, putting the Capitals ahead 4-3. To surpass Gretzky, he now needs to score three more goals.
In a memorable moment, Gretzky attended the game, and after the final buzzer, Ovechkin's teammates celebrated with him on the ice. Captain Nick Foligno of the Blackhawks was among those who congratulated the Capitals star before departing the rink.
In a post-game interview, Ovechkin expressed his gratitude towards his Russian supporters. “I would like to send greetings to everyone in Russia. Thank you all for your support! We’ll do everything we can to break the record,” he shared, noting that Gretzky had offered him his best wishes before the game.
