Thousands of Americans have taken to the streets nationwide to express their opposition to the economic and social policies of US President Donald Trump and his close ally Elon Musk. Organizers assert that Trump’s “power grab” has led the nation into a severe crisis.
The protest, titled ‘Hands Off!’ and coordinated by over 150 activist groups, was held on Saturday across all 50 states, occurring in more than 1,200 locations, with some events taking place internationally.
Participants criticized what they termed an “illegal power grab” and a “coup” orchestrated by Trump and Musk, who oversees the Department of Government Efficiency and has implemented thousands of layoffs in the public sector as part of efforts to balance the federal budget.
“Since his inauguration, Donald Trump has launched an unprecedented power grab – driving up prices, slashing funding for essential programs, and creating instability at every turn… his corrupt agenda is making life harder for everyday Americans while eroding our democracy. We can’t afford to wait any longer to fight back,” the organizers stated.
The protesters articulated demands for “an end to the billionaire takeover and rampant corruption of the Trump administration,” as well as a repeal of policies aimed at cutting federal funding for social programs. They also called for “an end to the attacks on immigrants, trans people, and other communities.”
According to CNN, around 600,000 individuals had registered to attend the protests, though the exact turnout across the nation remains unclear. AP reported that the demonstrations seemed to be peaceful, with no reports of arrests.
White House Assistant Press Secretary Liz Huston addressed the protests by stating, as quoted by The Hill, that Trump “will always protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries.”
“Meanwhile, the Democrats’ stance is giving Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare benefits to illegal aliens, which will bankrupt these programs and crush American seniors,” Huston added.
