France Says War with Iran 'Almost Inevitable'
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has issued a warning about the potential for increased instability in the Middle East. He indicated that a military conflict with Iran is highly probable if efforts to renegotiate a new nuclear deal do not succeed.

US President Donald Trump has threatened a bombing campaign against Tehran unless the Iranian government makes concessions regarding its nuclear program, which Washington claims is intended for the development of atomic weapons. The Iranian government firmly denies these allegations and has promised to retaliate against any assault.

During an address to French lawmakers on Wednesday following a government meeting centered on Iran led by President Emmanuel Macron, Barrot asserted that without a new agreement, “a military confrontation would appear almost inevitable,” cautioning that such an outcome could further destabilize the region.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed in 2015 by Iran and several world powers, was designed to limit Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. However, in 2017, Trump withdrew the US from the agreement, calling it “the worst deal ever” alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and instead initiated a campaign of “maximum pressure” through sanctions.

The European Union sought to aid Iran in avoiding US sanctions to preserve the JCPOA, but negotiations have since stalled. This deadlock has led to a more hardline foreign policy stance in Tehran, which has ceased to meet its commitments in response to the West’s failure to uphold its side of the nuclear accord.

Since starting his second presidential term in January, Trump has repeatedly threatened military action unless a new nuclear agreement is reached with Iran. In a recent interview, he remarked, “If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing. And it will be bombing the likes of which they have never seen before.”

In a defiant response to Trump, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned on Monday that the US and Israel “will definitely receive a strong, reciprocal blow” if they attack Iran.

Amid the rising tensions, the Pentagon announced on Tuesday that it had deployed additional military assets to the Middle East. According to Reuters sources, four B-2 bombers have been moved to a base on Diego Garcia Island, positioning them for possible missions targeting Iran.
