Vance Unveils Musk’s Future Role at the White House

Vance stated that Elon Musk will continue to be a “friend and adviser” to both President Trump and himself beyond his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency, which is expected to conclude by late May. Following this period, Musk is anticipated to refocus on his private ventures. The initiative DOGE, established under Trump’s executive order, will persist until at least 2026.
Earlier this week, Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, dismissed reports suggesting he would imminently leave the agency, labeling them as “fake news.” White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt characterized the media claims as "garbage," asserting that Musk would only depart once his responsibilities at DOGE are fulfilled.
In an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Vance reiterated that the reports concerning Musk's potential exit from public service were “total fake news.”
During the same interview, Vance remarked, “Elon came in and we said: ‘We need you to make government more efficient, we need you to shrink the incredible fat bureaucracy that thwarts the will of the American people, but also costs way too much money. We said: ‘That is going to take about six months’ – and that is what Elon signed up for.”
Vance emphasized that DOGE “has got a lot of work to do, and yeah, that work is going to continue after Elon leaves, but fundamentally, Elon is going to remain a friend and an adviser of both me and the president.” He reiterated that Musk’s contributions to the administration’s efforts are “not even close to done.”
In March 2025, US employers announced a total of 275,240 job cuts, marking the highest monthly total since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, as reported by the outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. It is noteworthy that 216,215 of these layoffs—nearly 80%—occurred within the federal government, largely driven by DOGE initiatives aimed at reducing federal spending by $1 trillion by July 2026.
