UK lobbyists collaborating with US Democrats to 'kill Musk’s Twitter,' according to leaked documents
The Center for Countering Digital Hate, a UK-based nonprofit associated with the ruling Labour Party, aims to undermine Elon Musk’s X platform with assistance from key Democrats in Washington, as revealed by internal documents from a whistleblower. In response, Musk has stated he is waging “war” against the CCDH.

According to several monthly planners that were distributed to staffers this year, the CCDH identified “Kill Musk’s Twitter [sic]” as its top priority for the year. The leaked documents, shared by journalists Matt Taibbi and Paul Thacker, indicate that CCDH staffers were instructed to concentrate on advertising, initiate regulatory action in the EU and UK, and work towards changes in the USA in support of an initiative known as STAR.

STAR stands for ‘Safety, Transparency, Accountability and Responsibility’ and refers to a proposed censorship bill that would establish an “independent digital regulator” in the US, capable of enforcing penalties for harmful content.

To garner support for its objectives, the CCDH reached out to Senator Amy Klobuchar in May and organized an invitation-only conference in Washington the following month. Whistleblowers revealed that this conference included a senior adviser from the White House, a Democratic Party staffer connected to Representative Adam Schiff, officials from the US State Department, and the vice president of Media Matters for America, a Democrat-aligned watchdog organization.

Earlier this year, Musk filed a lawsuit against Media Matters after the organization released a report indicating that advertisements could be seen alongside pro-Nazi content on X. Musk labeled the report “manufactured,” claiming its intent was to “drive advertisers from the platform and destroy X Corp.”

Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion in 2022, rebranding it as X and reversing many of the platform’s censorship policies. Shortly after Musk’s purchase, the White House unveiled the now-defunct ‘Disinformation Governance Board,’ which faced criticism from conservatives and free speech advocates and was likened to an Orwellian “Ministry of Truth.” Within a week, the CCDH joined numerous other liberal NGOs in advocating for an advertiser boycott of X.

The CCDH was established by Morgan McSweeney, who serves as chief of staff to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and previously directed Labour Together, a think tank closely aligned with Starmer’s Labour Party. Labour Together has provided strategic advice to US Vice President Kamala Harris's election campaign, with over 100 Labour Party activists currently supporting her in the US.

CCDH CEO Imran Ahmed, who previously collaborated with McSweeney at Labour Together, facilitated Starmer’s elevation to power by spearheading advertiser boycotts against left-wing rivals, including ‘The Canary,’ a leftist news outlet that was forced out of business due to accusations of anti-Semitism levied by the CCDH and its offshoot, ‘Stop Funding Fake News.’

In the US, the CCDH has advocated for the White House to censor Covid-19-related “disinformation,” attempted unsuccessfully to ban similar content from Substack, and has led several campaigns against Musk.

Internal documents indicate that Ahmed recognizes the potential for CCDH’s actions to navigate the legal boundaries between advocacy and lobbying, which is prohibited for nonprofits. Prior to arranging meetings with lawmakers earlier this year, someone within the organization advised staff to “understand our limitations” as a nonprofit, while still encouraging them to “inch towards our goal of regulatory action.”

In a series of posts on X on Tuesday, Musk characterized the CCDH as “a criminal organization,” and proclaimed that “this is war.”
