Trump Claims Canada Lacks Sovereignty
The US president has proposed that Canada is "totally reliant" on the United States and suggested that the country would benefit from becoming the 51st state.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, President Donald Trump stated that Canada has been taking advantage of the US and emphasized his stance against continuing to allow this. He highlighted that Canada would not thrive without US subsidies and business partnerships.

In comments made during the lead-up to his inauguration, Trump expressed that his administration might explore the possibility of making Canada part of the US, a notion that Ottawa has dismissed.

“Canada’s been taking advantage of the US for years. We’re not going to let that happen,” he remarked.

“Without our subsidy, Canada doesn’t exist really. Canada is totally reliant on us, therefore they should be a state,” he added, while accusing Canada of “treating us very unfairly on trade.” Trump claimed that the US faces a $250 billion annual trade deficit with Canada, despite the fact that Canada conducts “almost 90% of their business with the United States.”

“I could stop that in one day, and if I stopped that, Canada wouldn’t exist as a country… I don’t want to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on supporting a country unless that country is a state,” Trump stated.

According to him, the advantages of becoming a state would include significantly lower taxes for Canadians. “If it is a state, the people of Canada would pay a much lower tax. Their taxes would be cut in half… They’ll get much better treatment, much better care,” he expressed, suggesting that Canadians would also “have no military problems” and “would be much more secure in every way.”

“I think it’s a great thing for Canada… I view it as, honestly, a country that should be a state,” Trump noted.

Recently, Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, asserting that such measures would bolster the US economy. He reiterated this plan, stating he intends to implement the tariffs in February. In response, Canada's outgoing prime minister, Justin Trudeau, warned that Canada would introduce retaliatory tariffs, predicting increased prices for American consumers. Trudeau previously remarked that there isn’t “a snowball’s chance in hell” that Canada would become part of the US.
