An Israel Defense Forces tank fired at a UN peacekeeping outpost in southern Lebanon, damaging a watchtower and destroying surveillance equipment, as stated by the UN Interim Force in Lebanon on Wednesday.
The peacekeeping force characterized the incident as what appeared to be another “deliberate” attack by the IDF, urging the Israeli military to “respect the inviolability of UN premises at all times.”
“This morning, peacekeepers at a position near Kafer Kela observed an IDF Merkava tank firing at their watchtower. Two cameras were destroyed, and the tower was damaged,” the force reported.
This incident marks yet another instance of direct and seemingly intentional fire on a UNIFIL position.
The UN peacekeepers have consistently accused Israel of targeting their positions in southern Lebanon amid escalating tensions between West Jerusalem and Hezbollah. These attacks have led to damage at several UNIFIL installations, resulting in injuries to multiple peacekeepers.
The force was established in 1978 to monitor the withdrawal of Israeli forces south of the so-called Blue Line that separates Lebanon from Israel and the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights. Currently, UNIFIL consists of around 10,000 troops from about 50 countries and is responsible for ensuring that neither Israel nor Hezbollah maintains a military presence between the Blue Line and the Litani River.
Israel has charged the peacekeepers with serving as a “human shield” for Hezbollah militants. On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to withdraw UNIFIL troops from southern Lebanon entirely. He cautioned that if the force did not evacuate, the lives of the UN troops would be “endangered.” However, the peacekeepers have so far refused to leave their positions in the area.
