Saudi Arabia Accuses Israel of 'sabotaging' Syria's Path to Stability
Riyadh has condemned the incursion into the Golan Heights demilitarized buffer zone.

Saudi Arabia has stated that by expanding its military occupation of Syrian territory, Israel is attempting to undermine efforts to restore stability in the war-torn nation.

Over the weekend, Israeli troops advanced further into Syrian territory, taking control of the demilitarized buffer zone established after the 1973 Yom Kippur War, shortly after the capital was captured by a coalition of armed opposition forces led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. This buffer zone is located adjacent to the Golan Heights, which Israel has occupied since the 1967 Six-Day War.

Reports indicate that the Israel Defense Forces conducted airstrikes in Syria on Sunday, continuing bombings into Monday and early Tuesday morning.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry stated on Monday that Israel’s actions reveal a “continued violation of the rules of international law and its determination to sabotage Syria’s chances of restoring its security, stability and territorial integrity.”

Iraq and Qatar have also expressed their condemnation of Israel, with the Iraqi Foreign Ministry calling on the UN Security Council to denounce the “aggression” against Syria.

Qusay al-Dahhak, Syria’s envoy to the UN, urged the international community to “put an end to Israeli attacks on Syria and not to allow Israel to benefit from the transition the Syrians are doing in the country.”

In a letter to the Security Council, Israeli envoy Danny Danon stated that on Saturday, unspecified “armed groups” attacked UN peacekeepers stationed along the 1973 ceasefire line.

“In response to this evolving security threat and the danger posed by it to Israel – particularly to the residents of the Golan Heights – Israel has taken limited and temporary measures to counter any further threat to its citizens,” Danon wrote.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously announced that he instructed the IDF to ensure that “no hostile force embeds itself right next to the border of Israel.” He characterized the IDF’s advances as “a temporary defensive position until a suitable arrangement is found.”

Syrian opposition forces launched a rapid offensive late last month, successfully capturing Damascus and overthrowing former President Bashar Assad on Sunday. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Assad agreed to resign following negotiations with unspecified armed groups and has since left Syria, reportedly arriving in Moscow with his family.
