Gunfight near Israeli Embassy in Jordan turns deadly

The confrontation began when the suspect opened fire on police officers and attempted to escape, as stated by Jordan’s Public Security Directorate. A firefight ensued, leading to the suspect's death, as reported by Petra.
Videos circulating on social media showed the chaos, with loud gunfire echoing through the area and numerous emergency service vehicles present at the scene.
Three police officers sustained injuries in the attack and were transported to the hospital in moderate condition, the news agency indicated.
Amman has experienced a series of pro-Palestinian protests related to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict since October 2023. A substantial portion of Jordan's population, which totals around 11.5 million, is of Palestinian descent, many of whom have familial connections in the West Bank. As per UNRWA data, there are at least 2.39 million registered Palestinian refugees residing in Jordan.
Following the onset of the Gaza war and the October 7, 2023, Hamas raid on southern Israel, the Israeli ambassador to Amman left the country due to security apprehensions. In November of the same year, Jordan recalled its ambassador in protest against Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
The Israeli National Security Council has issued a travel advisory marking Jordan as the highest threat level for Israeli travelers, citing potential terrorist threats. The advisory states, “Travel to this country is not allowed. Those who are already there must leave immediately.”
