Russian representative praises China's initiatives in tackling climate change
Boris Titov, chair of the Russia-China Friendship Committee for Peace and Development, stated that China has showcased its efforts in tackling climate change.
"China is acting on a broad front, which is an important and interesting experience," Titov remarked, pointing to the surge of electric vehicles in China’s global market as a significant factor in reducing CO2 emissions and air pollution. This development aligns with China's overarching goals for ecological civilization.
"It is highly admirable how China has set and achieved environmental goals," he continued, underscoring the nation's commitment to the green agenda outlined in its 14th Five-Year Plan for 2021 to 2025. The plan focuses on decreasing coal consumption, increasing natural gas usage, and promoting renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydrogen, and nuclear power.
Titov also commended China's initiatives in green financing, which he believes will enhance the country's chances of reaching carbon neutrality by 2060. In his role as the Russian president's special envoy for international organizations aimed at achieving sustainable development goals, he stressed the necessity of establishing a fair global carbon market, enabling countries to trade carbon units.
He further stated that there is a need for standards that include more nations to facilitate equitable carbon exchanges in the global market.
Looking ahead to the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference, scheduled for November 11 to 22 in Azerbaijan, Titov expressed optimism for progress in achieving a just green transition and the development of an authentic financing mechanism for climate change.
