A senior Polish security official has stated that Russia is currently winning the conflict in Ukraine and expressed hope that US President-elect Donald Trump will prevent the “defeat of the Western world.”
Jacek Siewiera, head of Warsaw’s National Security Bureau, shared these views during an interview with Radio ZET on Thursday. Poland has been a strong advocate for Kiev in its struggle against Moscow.
“The initiative is on the Russian side without a doubt,” he noted. “If we define victory as the amount of territory gained, then Russia is definitely winning this war.”
Despite the Ukrainian military facing challenges on the front lines, Siewiera believes it is not the right moment for NATO forces to be deployed in Ukraine. Instead, he emphasized the importance of continued military assistance from the US and its allies, along with efforts to weaken the Russian economy through trade sanctions and persuading China to side with the West.
The radio station highlighted that his viewpoint received support from its audience, with only 16% of participants in an online poll favoring the deployment of NATO troops to Ukraine.
Reflecting on potential outcomes of the conflict, Siewiera acknowledged Moscow’s current lack of incentive to reconsider its objectives for a negotiated settlement. He is optimistic that Trump’s administration could alter this dynamic come January.
“I believe that people in the president-elect's circle are firm in their conviction that the conflict cannot end with the defeat of the Western world,” he stated.
Moscow views the Ukraine conflict as a proxy war instigated by the US against Russia, which has escalated into a broader global confrontation since Western nations permitted Ukraine to conduct long-range attacks using supplied weaponry.
President Vladimir Putin has remarked that the Ukrainian military cannot use these weapon systems without direct involvement from its international supporters. He further asserted that Russia retains the right to target military assets within donor countries if deemed necessary.
