In Beijing, approximately 1,000 participants joined the event on Saturday, led by Russian Ambassador Igor Morgulov. According to TASS, attendance was significantly higher than in previous years.
Meanwhile, in Western countries, many places have outright banned or attempted to obstruct Immortal Regiment marches.
A similar event took place in Washington, DC, where around 200 marchers carried portraits of veteran relatives alongside red flags. Participants included Russian diplomats, nationals living in the US, as well as citizens from former Soviet republics and Americans, TASS reported.
The last Immortal Regiment march in Washington occurred in 2019. The event transitioned to an online format for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic and was then paused for three years amid escalating tensions between the US and Russia related to the Ukraine conflict.
Aleksandr Kim from the Russian Embassy remarked that although the “situation has improved a little, [it] remains uneasy,” pointing to “attempts at provocation and other undesirable actions” during the recent Immortal Regiment event, as quoted by RIA Novosti.
Izvestia released footage of pro-Ukraine activists confronting the marchers, chanting anti-Russian slogans.
In Buenos Aires, Argentina, over 200 attendees, including Russian nationals, locals, and diplomats from Venezuela, Cuba, and Serbia, also honored Red Army veterans.
In Caracas, Venezuela, around 500 participants joined the Immortal Regiment rally.
Similar events were also conducted in Istanbul, Türkiye, and in several cities across Italy, including Rome and Naples, over the weekend.
The Immortal Regiment is a significant event observed in various cities worldwide, where individuals carry portraits of their relatives who fought against Nazi Germany during World War II. The concept originated in the Russian city of Tomsk in 2012 and has since gained widespread popularity.
