Bill Gates reveals specifics of 'intriguing' dinner with Trump

The meeting included Susie Wiles, the incoming White House Chief of Staff, along with a member of Gates' staff. They explored how Trump could play a vital role in achieving significant public health milestones, such as finding a cure for HIV and eradicating polio. Gates noted, “He was fascinated to hear what he could do to maximize the chance that during the next four years that incredible milestone [eradication of polio] will be achieved.”
In his remarks to the Wall Street Journal, Gates reflected on how Trump's actions during the Covid pandemic had “accelerated the vaccine innovation,” prompting him to suggest that a similar strategy could be employed regarding the HIV cure the Gates Foundation is pursuing. "So I was asking him if maybe the same kind of thing could be done here. And we both got, I think, pretty excited about that,” Gates stated.
He expressed that he was “frankly impressed with how well he showed a lot of interest in the issues I brought up,” noting that Trump seemed “energized and looking forward to helping to drive innovation.”
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is a major player in global health initiatives, contributing significantly to efforts against diseases such as malaria, HIV, and polio, in addition to supporting vaccine development and distribution.
As Trump prepares to enter office again, expectations are mounting regarding potential shifts in healthcare policy. There are indications that he may revisit his previous attempt to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO), a move he initiated in 2020 amid criticism of the organization’s China ties and handling of the pandemic. However, President Joe Biden reestablished the US's relationship with the WHO shortly after taking office in January 2021.
Additionally, Trump has nominated Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vaccine skeptic, for the role of secretary of health and human services, pending Senate approval. RFK Jr. has openly criticized various Covid-19 response measures, including lockdowns and vaccine rollouts, and has previously accused Gates of utilizing “philanthro-capitalism” to exert influence over global health policies. In an interview, he remarked, “He’s gotten control of the World Health Organization so that they mandate vaccines all over the world and the companies that make those vaccines are, Gates’ and many of them the major shareholder.”
