During an interview with NBC News on Sunday, the president responded to ongoing speculation about a potential third term. He noted that such a pursuit would necessitate a significant change to the US electoral system, as the Constitution restricts presidential terms to two.
Trump mentioned that “many people” are encouraging him to run again but asserted that he will not be seeking a new term. He also seemed to question the constitutional limits on presidential terms, saying, “So many people want me to do it. I have never had requests so strong as that. But it’s something that, to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do. I don’t know if that’s constitutional, that they’re not allowing you to do it or anything else.”
His previous comments had raised concerns that he might consider altering the US electoral framework to maintain his presidency. Nonetheless, various prominent Republicans have suggested that the president's remarks were made in jest regarding a third term.
Recently, the controversy deepened with the introduction of “TRUMP 2028” merchandise in his official campaign store, which features items like baseball caps and T-shirts bearing slogans such as ‘TRUMP 2028’ and ‘Rewrite the Rules.’
Despite the merchandise's presence, the president sought to clarify his stance, stating, “There are many people selling the 2028 hat, but this is not something I’m looking to do. I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody. Ideally, a great Republican, a great Republican to carry it forward. But I think we’re going to have four years and I think four years is plenty of time to do something really spectacular.”
When pressed about potential successors, Trump noted that it is premature to endorse anyone, pointing out that the Republican Party boasts a wealth of strong candidates. “I think [the party is] so strong, and I think we have tremendous people. I think we have a tremendous group of people. We talked about a number of them. You look at Marco. You look at J. D. Vance, who’s fantastic. You look at I could name 10, 15, 20 people right now just sitting here," he said.
