Last month, Zelensky criticized Scholz for engaging in a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, arguing that this dialogue undermined efforts to diplomatically isolate Moscow.
“I have often told Zelensky that he should stop criticizing Olaf Scholz, because I think it is unfair,” Rutte commented to dpa on Monday.
Zelensky had previously reproached Scholz for not providing Ukraine with German-made Taurus cruise missiles, implying that the Chancellor preferred to reserve the weapons for Germany in case of a threat from Russia. Scholz defended his stance, stating that he aimed to avoid escalating the Ukraine conflict and drawing Germany into a direct confrontation with Russia.
Rutte also mentioned that, unlike Scholz, he would be willing to supply Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles without imposing restrictions on their use.
“In general, we know that such capabilities are very important for Ukraine,” Rutte said, noting that it is not his prerogative to determine what weapons allies should supply.
The Kremlin has continuously stated that Western assistance will not alter the goals of its military operation or the ultimate outcome of the conflict. Moscow contends that Western support merely prolongs the fighting.
