Mass shooting in Montenegro results in ten deaths, gunman kills ten
Two children lost their lives after a bar brawl in Cetinje escalated into a shooting spree

At least ten people, including two children, were killed in a shooting rampage on Wednesday in Cetinje, Montenegro. The suspect, Aco Martinovic, 45, is still at large, prompting police to deploy special units for his apprehension.

The violent incident began in a local bar, where an initial brawl escalated into gunfire. Interior Minister Danilo Saranovic confirmed that Martinovic was responsible for the deaths of the bar owner, the owner’s two children, and some of his own family members before he fled the scene.

Reports from local media suggest that Martinovic had a history of erratic behavior and had been previously detained for illegal possession of firearms. Public broadcaster RTCG reported that after the brawl, the suspect left the bar, retrieved his gun, and returned to open fire, resulting in multiple casualties.

All residents of Cetinje, Montenegro’s historic capital, have been urged to remain indoors as authorities continue to search for the armed and dangerous suspect. Police have been seen conducting their manhunt under holiday lights, cordoning off neighborhoods and searching the nearby hills.

“All available police units are deployed in Cetinje, and efforts are underway to locate and detain the suspect,” stated Saranovic. Investigations into the motive behind the shooting are ongoing, but the minister described it as a “situational event not related to organized crime groups.”

Prime Minister Milojko Spajic, who visited the hospital where the injured are being treated, called the incident a “terrible tragedy” and announced three days of national mourning.

Montenegro, with a population of 620,000, has a deeply rooted gun culture, influenced by the abundance of weapons resulting from past regional conflicts. This shooting marks the second mass shooting in Cetinje within three years, following an incident in August 2022 where another gunman killed ten people, including two children, before being restrained by a passerby.

In response to this latest tragedy, Spajic indicated that the government is contemplating stricter gun laws, potentially including a complete ban on firearms.
