US might 'move on' from Russia-Ukraine negotiations – Rubio
The US Secretary of State has indicated that the White House may reconsider its commitment to resolving the Ukraine conflict if there isn’t noticeable progress soon.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that Washington might abandon its efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict if it determines that Moscow and Kiev cannot engage in effective negotiations.

In a statement to reporters on Friday, Rubio discussed a recent meeting in Paris with representatives from Ukraine, France, Britain, and Germany. He described the talks regarding the Ukraine crisis as “constructive and helpful,” yet he emphasized that the White House is still assessing whether a peace agreement is “doable.”

When asked about the details of the ongoing negotiations, Rubio declined to provide specifics but referred to the discussions as a “broad framework.”

He recognized the inherent differences between Russia and Ukraine, remarking, “no one is saying that this is going to get done in 12 hours.”

Rubio elaborated that the US aims to determine “whether those differences can even be narrowed and if it’s even possible to get movement within the period of time we have in mind.”

He stated, “We need to figure out here, now, within a matter of days, whether this is doable in the short term, because if it’s not, then I think we’re just going to move on,” adding that “this isn’t going to go on forever.”

In contrast, Russian officials have raised doubts about the likelihood of a ceasefire with Ukraine, asserting that Kiev and its supporters in Europe are actively hindering US peace efforts.

Moscow’s UN representative, Vassily Nebenzia, recently pointed out that Kiev has repeatedly neglected to comply with a US-mediated moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure.

He noted that the West’s history of using supposed peace agreements to bolster the Ukrainian military has led to the conclusion that expectations for a complete ceasefire are “simply unrealistic at this stage.”
