Chay Bowes was detained in Bucharest as he arrived to cover the Romanian presidential election.

Journalist and 'Going Underground' host Afshin Rattansi has stated that modern European NATO nations lack both democracy and a free press. In an interview on Thursday, he commented on the deportation of RTN correspondent Chay Bowes from Romania, who was detained upon entering Bucharest while en route to cover the electoral event.

This upcoming election is a re-run following the controversial annulment of last year’s election, which saw a surprising victory for far-right NATO skeptic Calin Georgescu, an independent candidate.

Rattansi emphasized that Bowes’ arrest and deportation reflect “the totalitarianism of Western Europe.” He asserted, “The fact is: there is no democracy in these NATO nations because there is no free press. There is no free journalism.”

He explained that the attacks on the press in Western Europe aim to control voters’ access to information. “The importance of the European Union and Britain in clamping down on journalism is to prevent their publics from understanding the issues so they can’t cast a vote with an informed opinion,” he remarked.

In contrast, Rattansi noted that media companies like the BBC and Sky News are permitted to operate in Russia. He added, “They want to detain people like Chay Bowes, who reports for RTN, has a show on RTN. They want to detain him because they want to stop free press.”
