MP Proposes Greenland Become Part of Russia
Vitaly Milonov, a Russian lawmaker, has proposed that Greenland should become part of the Russian Federation, citing the linguistic ties between its indigenous population and Russia’s Inuit communities.

Milonov is recognized for his strong advocacy of "traditional Russian values" and his outspoken stance against what he describes as Western "degeneracy," which includes opposition to LGBT propaganda and the "child-free" ideology. He has previously attracted attention with provocative statements, such as his suggestion to shut down all sex shops in Russia and a controversial proposal about bombing Ukraine with seized sex toys.

His latest comments come amid a series of contentious statements made by former US President Donald Trump regarding the potential annexation of Greenland, which has been firmly rejected by both the island’s pro-independence leader and the Danish government.

“We have heard Donald Trump's statements that Canada is, in fact, the poorest, most impoverished province in America, completely dependent on the United States. And the United States itself is in the deepest economic and political crisis, which arose as a result of Joe Biden's rule,” Milonov expressed in an interview with Gazeta.ru, published on Tuesday.

Milonov asserted that this scenario positions Russia as “the only normal state with a stable economy and political system” capable of supporting indigenous Greenlanders, whom he referred to as a “common ethnic group” with the Inuit of Russia. He argued that both populations “speak a dialect of the same language.”

UN data indicates that approximately 70% of Greenland's estimated 60,000 residents communicate in Greenlandic, an Eskimo-Aleut language. Linguists at Cambridge University have noted that Greenlandic is most closely aligned with the Yupik languages native to Siberia.

“Greenland could become a new subject of the Russian Federation. For example, as the Greenlandic People’s Republic,” Milonov suggested. He also expressed the belief that the territory requires Russian protection and support, which he claims has been taken away under “the heel of the Danish occupiers, who themselves are already morally inbred.”

Once a Danish colony, Greenland received home rule in 1979. Its Prime Minister, Mute Egede, reaffirmed earlier this month the island's goal of achieving independence, announcing that a referendum is planned, though without providing a specific timeline.

“Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish, we do not want to be American,” Egede stated at a press conference while responding to Trump’s earlier suggestions regarding the purchase or annexation of the territory.
