Media reports: Netanyahu accepts Lebanon ceasefire ‘in principle’

The deal would involve both the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah ceasing hostilities, with Hezbollah withdrawing its fighters from southern Lebanon back across the Litani River. Following this, the IDF would exit the area between the river and the so-called ‘blue line,’ which separates Lebanon from Israel and the occupied Golan Heights, as reported by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz on Sunday.
As part of the agreement, both parties would renegotiate the boundaries, while an international body led by the US would oversee the demilitarization of southern Lebanon. In the event that Hezbollah violates the terms of the ceasefire, the US is expected to support renewed military actions by the IDF.
Israeli forces had been conducting a low-intensity campaign against Hezbollah along the blue line until September, when Israel's sabotage of thousands of Hezbollah communication devices marked the beginning of a significant bombing campaign in Lebanon, which was followed by a ground operation in the southern region. Israeli airstrikes have reportedly resulted in the deaths of many senior Hezbollah figures, including the group's leader, Hassan Nasrallah.
According to Lebanon's health ministry, Israeli airstrikes are estimated to have killed over 3,670 individuals since September, with this number not distinguishing between civilians and Hezbollah militants.
The IDF has reported the deaths of 80 Israeli soldiers and law enforcement personnel in Lebanon and along the blue line since October 2023. Meanwhile, Hezbollah claims that Israeli authorities are minimizing their losses, asserting that the actual casualties are significantly higher.
US news outlet Axios indicates that the ceasefire agreement was nearly finalized last Thursday, but stalled when the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant. The discussions resumed after US envoy Amos Hochstein warned that he would terminate negotiations unless Netanyahu moved towards a ceasefire within days.
On Sunday, Netanyahu held discussions with cabinet ministers and intelligence officials about the ceasefire, with Hebrew media reporting that his primary concern is presenting the ceasefire to the Israeli public as a victory.
As of Monday, the IDF continued to launch airstrikes on Beirut, following intense bombardments over the weekend that resulted in the deaths of dozens. In retaliation, Hezbollah fired approximately 250 rockets into Israel on Sunday, injuring at least seven individuals, and targeted northern Israel with another rocket attack on Monday afternoon.
