Israel and the Lebanon-based armed group Hezbollah have accused one another of violating a ceasefire that was agreed upon earlier this week, which came into effect on Wednesday morning.
On Thursday, the Israeli military reported that its air force targeted a facility in southern Lebanon, which was allegedly used by Hezbollah to store mid-range rockets. This marks the first attack since the US-brokered truce was implemented. Lebanese security sources, as reported by Reuters, indicated that the strike occurred near Baysariyah, north of the Litani River.
West Jerusalem also confirmed that its troops opened fire at what they referred to as “suspects” in vehicles traveling in various locations within the southern zone, where Israel has been focusing its military operations, calling the movement of vehicles a breach of the ceasefire terms.
Hassan Fadlallah, a senior Hezbollah politician, accused Israel of disregarding the accord, asserting that the Israeli military was “attacking those returning to the border villages.” According to reports, the Lebanese Army stated that Israel had violated the ceasefire multiple times on both Wednesday and Thursday.
The ceasefire, aimed at halting over a year of conflict, was announced by US President Joe Biden on Tuesday, just hours after Israeli jets conducted shelling in Beirut and other Lebanese locales, while Hezbollah responded with rocket fire targeting the Galilee region of Israel.
The truce stipulates that the Lebanese Army and police will be deployed to the border with Israel within the next two months. Biden noted that West Jerusalem is expected to “gradually withdraw its remaining forces and civilians.” He also emphasized that Hezbollah and “other terrorist organizations will not be allowed” in the region.
The conflict between Hezbollah and the IDF escalated in October 2023, with Hezbollah asserting that hostilities would not cease until Israel ends its operations against Hamas in Gaza.
Israel launched an incursion into southern Lebanon in early October, significantly increasing airstrikes on Beirut and other cities, resulting in the elimination of several high-ranking Hezbollah officials, including the group's longtime leader, Hassan Nasrallah.
Since October 2023, Hezbollah attacks have resulted in over 60 Israeli deaths, and Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon have claimed more than 3,500 lives, according to officials from both sides. Approximately 70,000 individuals in Israel and around 1.2 million in Lebanon have been displaced.
Biden has also committed to reviving efforts for a ceasefire agreement in Gaza after prior attempts to urge Israel and Hamas to suspend hostilities were unsuccessful. Israel declared war on the Gaza-based Palestinian group following its October 7, 2023 raid, which left more than 1,100 Israelis dead, with around 250 taken hostage.
