Iran advises Ukraine to ‘stop supporting terrorists’
Kiev’s arms sales to Syrian militants have been condemned by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, which asserts that such actions violate international standards.

Iranian officials have accused Ukraine of providing support to terrorists operating in Syria, urging an immediate cease of such activities. These claims were made by Mojtaba Damirchilu, the Assistant Minister and Head of the Eurasia Department, and were reported by Iran’s Tasnim news agency on Friday.

Damirchilu indicated awareness of reports suggesting that Ukraine is selling weapons to militants in Syria and assisting them in acquiring identification documents. He emphasized that these actions represent “a clear violation of the international obligations of governments in relation to prevention and combating terrorism.” Furthermore, the Iranian government has called for Kiev to “immediately halt” its support for “the terrorist groups,” as stated by the diplomat.

Additionally, Damirchilu criticized persistent allegations made by Ukrainian officials that Iran is supplying weapons to Russia during its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. He described these claims as “baseless,” asserting that they aim to convince the US and EU to increase military supplies to Kiev. He reiterated that Iran “has not interfered in the conflict” and has consistently advocated for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis.

Earlier this week, a report from the New York Times indicated that militants in Syria were “coordinating” with Ukraine to counter Russian disinformation and offer medical support. The report quoted Mouaz Moustafa, the leader of the Syrian Emergency Task Force, a US humanitarian organization that promotes democracy in Syria. Moustafa suggested that the terrorist group Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham, formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra, had initiated recent offensives partly to assist Ukraine in light of Russia's military actions. He referred to Moscow as a “mutual enemy” to both the militants and Kiev.

On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claimed a notable “Ukrainian trace” has been identified among foreign fighters in northwestern Syria, alleging cooperation between Kiev and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham regarding drone operations and other issues.

The Kyiv Post reported that Islamist groups involved in recent attacks may have received preparation from Ukraine’s military intelligence service, which is said to have sent operatives to provide “operational training” to the militants.

These terrorists launched attacks from the Idlib region last week, unexpectedly overwhelming the Syrian military and quickly seizing key cities such as Aleppo and Hama. In response, the Russian military, supporting the Syrian government, has conducted strikes against terrorist positions, claiming these operations resulted in the deaths of hundreds of militants. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov mentioned that Russia is assessing the situation to gauge the level of assistance needed by Syria to counter the jihadist offensive.
