IDF Captures 'Senior Hezbollah Official'
A Lebanese citizen has reportedly been captured in an ‘‘unprecedented’’ naval operation by Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces has taken a Lebanese individual identified as a “senior Hezbollah operative” during an ‘‘unprecedented’’ naval raid deep inside Lebanon, as reported by various media outlets.

The abduction occurred at dawn on Friday, approximately 30 miles north of Beirut, where heavily armed special forces are said to have landed on a beach in Batroun, seized the individual, and made their escape on speedboats.

In a statement, Israel’s military announced that the person taken, Imad Amhaz, was a “senior operative of Hezbollah” and allegedly responsible for the militant group’s naval operations. The statement noted that he “has been transferred to Israeli territory and is currently being investigated,” as cited by Axios from Israeli sources.

The Lebanese government confirmed the kidnapping of one of its citizens, asserting that Amhaz was a civilian naval officer taken about a hundred yards from his residence.

Hezbollah responded on Saturday by labeling the incident as “Zionist aggression,” although the group has not verified any connection to the abducted individual.

This operation marks a notable escalation, as it is the first instance of Israeli forces deploying troops this deeply into northern Lebanon, approximately 100 miles from the countries’ border and in a region not connected to Hezbollah. Reports from Lebanon’s National News Agency indicated that “an unidentified military force carried out a landing operation on the beach of Batroun, and moved … to a chalet near the beach, where it kidnapped the citizen Imad Amhaz and … left by speedboats to the open sea.”

CCTV footage shared by Lebanese reporters appears to show a large group of armed men escorting a man with his hands bound and his face covered by a shirt.

The raid has ignited widespread outrage among Lebanese officials. Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati stated that he had urged the Foreign Ministry to lodge a complaint against Israel at the UN Security Council. Lebanese Transport Minister Ali Hamieh expressed concerns that the abduction might violate UN Security Council resolution 1701, which concluded the hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006. He questioned, “If it is proven that the kidnapping took place via a naval landing, where is the implementation of Resolution 1701?”

In late September, Israeli forces launched a significant air campaign against Lebanon and have engaged in ground raids in the southern region since then.
