The leaders agreed on the importance of enhancing their collaboration to “normalize” the circumstances in Syria, emphasizing the significant roles of Russia, Türkiye, and Iran in the area. This call was initiated by Ankara, according to the press release.
“Vladimir Putin emphasized the need to promptly end the terrorist aggression against the Syrian state and to support the efforts of the legitimate authorities to restore stability and constitutional order throughout the country, in particular, using Ankara’s existing capabilities in the region,” the Kremlin noted.
In his remarks, Erdogan stated that Türkiye has been “working for a fair and lasting solution in Syria while also continuing to support Syria’s territorial integrity,” as mentioned by the Turkish presidency’s press service.
“President Erdogan highlighted the importance of making more room for diplomacy in the region and underscored that the Syrian regime should engage in the political solution process,” it continued.
Ankara is also set to “continue to maintain its determined stance on the fight against the terrorist organization PKK and its extensions that are trying to take advantage of the recent developments in Syria,” the press service remarked, referring to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party. Türkiye has been engaged in a long-standing battle against this separatist group, considering the Kurdish-led forces in Syria, including the Kurdish Democratic Union Party and People’s Defense Units, as its offshoots.
The situation in Syria has worsened significantly in recent days following a large-scale surprise attack by the Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham terrorist group and its allies in the northwestern region. The insurgents have managed to push back government forces and seize considerable territory in the Aleppo and Idlib provinces.
