Hezbollah has pledged to retaliate against Israel following explosions that targeted pagers, which are crucial for the Lebanon-based Islamist group’s communications. The blasts reportedly killed several Hezbollah members and injured around 3,000 others on Tuesday. Among the wounded was Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amini, along with several high-ranking Hezbollah officials.
Media reports have indicated that the explosions may have been the result of a scheme involving Israel’s spy agency, Mossad, though West Jerusalem has not confirmed any responsibility for the incident.
Hezbollah stated on Wednesday that it considers “the Israeli enemy fully responsible for this criminal aggression,” and it reaffirmed its commitment to continue military operations against Israel in support of Hamas in Gaza, despite the recent blasts.
“This path is continuous and separate from the difficult reckoning that the criminal enemy must await for its massacre on Tuesday… This is another reckoning that will come,” the group asserted, emphasizing that the attack will only bolster their determination.
The New York Times reported that, according to sources familiar with the situation, Israel concealed explosives within pagers branded by the Taiwanese company Gold Apollo before dispatching them to Lebanon. Gold Apollo acknowledged that it had permitted the use of its name on the pagers, but clarified that their production was completed by a Budapest-based firm.
Hezbollah's reliance on pagers and other low-tech communications stems from concerns that cellular communications could be intercepted or tracked by Israeli intelligence.
Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, which maintains close affiliations with Iran, have escalated significantly since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war last October. While cross-border attacks have been common, resulting in numerous casualties, both sides have heretofore avoided direct confrontation.
