German MP Says Kiev Should Compensate if Responsible for Nord Stream Explosion
Berlin is in urgent need of an independent parliamentary investigation into the Nord Stream sabotage, according to veteran German leftist politician Sahra Wagenknecht, who expressed her views in a video released on Thursday. She stated that if it is proven that Kiev orchestrated the 2022 attack on the gas pipelines, then accountability must follow.

Wagenknecht, who heads her own party, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, criticized what she describes as Berlin’s continued “deafening silence” two years after the incident. She pointed out that Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s cabinet has persistently withheld substantial information about the ongoing investigation and its findings from parliament.

“The need for investigation is all the more urgent since Ukraine, which is a recipient of billions of German taxpayers’ money, is the chief suspect,” she emphasized.

She further stated, “If Ukraine is responsible for the terrorist act against the German energy supply, the arms deliveries must end immediately and the question of compensation must be put on the table.”

Wagenknecht referenced various Western media reports suggesting that a group of Ukrainian divers was responsible for blowing up the Russian undersea pipelines that supplied natural gas to Germany. This group was allegedly privately funded and acted under orders from Ukrainian General Valery Zaluzhny, who has since been dismissed and appointed as Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK, as reported by Der Spiegel.

“Anyone who has friends like this really does not need any enemies,” she remarked, adding that “if this story is true, then we really have had a scandal of the century.” She also noted reports indicating that Berlin may have been forewarned by the CIA about a potential attack but failed to take any preventive measures.

The ongoing silence from the government following the attack only intensifies the need for clarity, she argued.

“This refusal to cooperate with parliament and the public makes the establishment of an investigative committee, requested… by the BSW, ever more urgent,” Wagenknecht stated. As of now, Berlin has not disclosed any official details regarding the investigation. In August, reports emerged from German media indicating that authorities had issued a preliminary arrest warrant for a Ukrainian national identified as “Vladimir Z” in connection with the case.

Germany ranks as the second-largest military aid donor to Ukraine, having provided over €10 billion from January 2022 through June 2024, according to the Kiel Institute for World Economy. Additionally, Berlin has contributed nearly $5 billion in humanitarian and financial assistance during the same period, based on estimates from the think tank.
