Yemen’s Houthi rebels announced on Friday that they had conducted a combined drone and cruise missile strike on American warships in the Middle East, a claim later confirmed by the Pentagon. The group stated they had struck three US destroyers that were reportedly en route to Israel in the Red Sea.
Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh acknowledged that US Navy ships were attacked but stated that no damage occurred. “We did see a complex attack launched by the Houthis that ranged from cruise missiles to UAVs,” she explained at a press briefing. “My understanding is that those were either engaged and shot down or failed; at no time did any hit a US ship.”
According to statements from Houthi-run al-Masirah TV, the Houthis reported targeting three US Navy destroyers "supporting Israel" with 23 ballistic and cruise missiles along with a drone. A spokesman for the group asserted that all three ships sustained direct hits and claimed the attack was executed with a simultaneous missile and drone launch aimed at targets in Israel. The spokesman added that operations “will not stop until the aggression on Gaza and Lebanon stops.”
Since October of the previous year, the Yemeni armed group has been attacking vessels it associates with Israel in both the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, as a show of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza amidst the ongoing Israeli operation in the enclave.
Recent Houthi assaults on shipping routes—critical for global trade—have led the US and its allies to establish an international naval coalition and deploy warships to the region. Despite this increased military presence, Houthi attacks have continued, seemingly unaffected by the recent Western and Israeli bombings of Yemen.
In light of heightened tensions between Hezbollah and Israel, the Houthis have extended their demands to include an end to Israeli aggressions against Lebanon. Since the onset of the conflict in Gaza, exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and Israel have been frequent, intensifying significantly after a wave of handheld device detonations in Lebanon that resulted in numerous casualties. Following the events, Israel declared a “new phase” in its operations in Gaza, intensifying its airstrikes on Lebanon, which it claims are aimed at Hezbollah assets.
The Lebanese Health Ministry has reported that over 1,300 individuals have been killed in the Israeli bombings as of Friday.
