SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been spending an extended period at US President-elect Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, with some sources suggesting he is “behaving as if he’s a co-president,” according to NBC News. Trump’s team has refuted claims of any tension between them.
Musk arrived at Mar-a-Lago on election night and has reportedly been assisting the transition team throughout the past week. He has offered input on Trump’s cabinet selections and participated in calls with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, even speaking directly with Zelensky at one point.
However, Musk's close involvement has seemingly irritated some members of the president-elect’s transition staff. A source at Mar-a-Lago told NBC that Musk is “sure taking lots of credit for the president’s victory," adding that he is “bragging about America PAC and X to anyone who will listen.” The source expressed concern that Musk is trying to create a sense of indebtedness in Trump, mentioning, “And the president is indebted to no one.”
A second source indicated that Musk has an “opinion on and about everything,” and his habit of sharing these views has begun to frustrate Trump’s senior aides. “He wants to be seen as having a say in everything,” the source remarked, cautioning that Musk's proactive lobbying might affect his relationship with the president-elect in the long term.
In the past week, several insiders connected to Trump have provided a steady flow of transition-related tidbits to the media. The accuracy of this information is uncertain, particularly regarding Musk, who is often praised by Trump.
"Elon Musk is a great guy, loaded with personality and ‘brainpower’,” Trump stated on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday. He added that Musk’s endorsement meant a great deal to him and to MAGA supporters, noting, “He’s at a beautiful Mar-a-Lago concert right now, and the crowd absolutely loves him,” and emphasized that Musk’s contribution to his victory “will never be forgotten.”
A spokesperson for Trump emphasized the bond between the two leaders, stating, “Elon Musk and President Trump are great friends and brilliant leaders working together to Make America Great Again. Elon Musk is a once in a generation business leader and our federal bureaucracy will certainly benefit from his ideas and efficiency.”
During a meeting with House Republicans on Wednesday morning, Trump humorously remarked that “Elon won’t go home. I can’t get rid of him.” He praised Musk for his devotion of time and resources to the campaign, with Republican lawmakers telling NBC that his comment about Musk’s persistence was made light-heartedly.
On Tuesday, Trump nominated Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the Department of Government Efficiency. Although it is not a formal federal agency, the DOGE will “provide advice and guidance” to the White House and the Office of Management and Budget concerning regulatory elimination, government spending reduction, and agency restructuring, according to Trump’s statement.
