FBI Expresses ‘Confidence’ That Iran Attempted to Meddle in US Election
The US intelligence community has expressed its certainty that Iran attempted to infiltrate the presidential campaigns of Republican candidate Donald Trump, and Democrats Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, according to statements from the FBI and other federal agencies. Iran, however, has rebutted these claims, urging the US to present concrete proof.

A collective statement issued by the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency on Monday accused Iran of trying to sow discord and erode trust in America’s democratic institutions through prolonged efforts.

According to the agencies, “The Intelligence Community is confident that the Iranians have through social engineering and other efforts sought access to individuals with direct access to the presidential campaigns of both political parties.”

In their statement, the agencies discussed how these endeavors involved unsanctioned access and data leaks intended to impact the US electoral process. They pointed out that such tactics were not unique to this instance, noting similar past efforts by Iran and Russia, though Russia has consistently refuted such accusations.

The agencies further elaborated that Iran perceives the current US election as significant, believing it has considerable implications for its security interests, which may motivate attempts to influence the election results.

Last week, Donald Trump’s campaign team reported that foreign entities had accessed various internal documents and communications. Additionally, Google has reported that an Iranian-affiliated hacking group carried out a phishing campaign aiming to harvest personal data and infiltrate accounts from both involved parties in the presidential race.

In response to these allegations, Iran has dismissed them as unfounded, labeling them as lacking credibility. The Iranian mission to the UN conveyed through the IRNA news agency, “Should the US government genuinely believe in the validity of its claims, it should furnish us with the pertinent evidence – if any – to which we will respond accordingly.”

Furthermore, Iran has previously stated that it has been the target of numerous cyber-attacks against its infrastructure, emphasizing that its cyber capabilities are defensive and proportionate to the threats it encounters.
