US President-elect Donald Trump has selected Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, a strong supporter of Israel and an advocate for a robust foreign policy, to be the next ambassador to the United Nations.
“I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as US Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter,” Trump stated in a media announcement on Monday.
If the Senate confirms her appointment, Stefanik, a congresswoman representing New York, will succeed Linda Thomas-Greenfield, a career diplomat who has been serving as the US representative at the UN since 2021.
In a social media post on Sunday, Stefanik declared that the US was “ready for a return to President Trump’s MAXIMUM PRESSURE campaign against Iran,” contending that Tehran has been “emboldened by the weakness of the Biden-Harris Administration.”
During Trump’s first presidential term, the US abandoned the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement and intensified sanctions on the Islamic Republic. In January 2020, a US drone strike near Baghdad airport resulted in the death of Qassem Soleimani, a senior Iranian commander. The White House accused him of coordinating attacks against American military personnel and civilians in Iraq and Syria. Iran condemned the strike as a violation of international law.
Stefanik has been a vocal supporter of Israel in its ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza and its airstrikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon. She endorsed West Jerusalem’s decision to bar the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine, with Israel accusing its staff of aiding Hamas. “The Biden-Harris Administration has sent over $1 billion to UNRWA since 2021, filling the coffers of this terrorist front. This must end,” she stated earlier this month.
Additionally, Stefanik has frequently highlighted instances of antisemitism during pro-Palestinian protests at college campuses across the United States.
Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, praised Stefanik’s nomination, commending her “unwavering moral clarity.”
Outgoing President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have faced criticism from Arab American and Muslim American groups for failing to suspend military aid to Israel and for not doing enough to advocate for a ceasefire in Gaza.
