The explosion took place in the heart of the city around 8 PM, leading to extensive damage to a vehicle nearby. Perez Amer, the Central District Commander, communicated that the emergency services were alerted by "dozens of calls" about a loud explosion and debris found at Lehi Street.
Upon arriving at the scene, emergency responders found a severely damaged body and evidence of an explosion on a building's wall, Amer noted. The individual, later identified as 50-year-old Gideon Peri, was declared dead at the location.
A scooter rider passing by at the time of the incident was moderately wounded by shrapnel and required hospitalization.
The investigation posits that the explosive device was on Peri’s person. Officials initially struggled to identify the remains but later concluded that the individual was not an innocent bystander but someone involved with the explosion.
Unconfirmed videos have surfaced online, one showing the moments leading to the blast and another capturing a man armed with a backpack, believed to possibly be the precursor to the explosion.
“Whether this is criminal or terrorism-related, it's too early to say,” stated Amer, underscoring the importance of comprehending the incident's nature. Israel's Shin Bet has joined the ongoing investigation into this incident.
