Bill Gates highlighted discussions with US President-elect Donald Trump on utilizing lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic to “accelerate innovation” in tackling other global health issues, as noted in an excerpt from his interview with The Wall Street Journal.
The Microsoft founder and global healthcare advocate referred to his recent three-hour dinner with Trump as “long and actually quite intriguing.” The discussion, which included incoming White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and a staff member from Gates' team, reportedly centered on how Trump could aid in significant milestones such as finding a cure for HIV and eradicating polio.
“He was fascinated to hear what he could do to maximize the chance that during the next four years that incredible milestone [eradication of polio] will be achieved,” Gates mentioned in the clip shared by The Wall Street Journal on Friday.
Reflecting on Trump's actions during the Covid pandemic, Gates noted how he had “accelerated the vaccine innovation” and encouraged Trump to adopt a similar strategy for the HIV cure that the Gates Foundation is currently pursuing.
“So I was asking him if maybe the same kind of thing could be done here. And we both got, I think, pretty excited about that,” Gates remarked.
“I was frankly impressed with how well he showed a lot of interest in the issues I brought up,” Gates added, observing that Trump appeared “energized and looking forward to helping to drive innovation.”
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the largest non-state contributors to the World Health Organization, plays a crucial role in global health initiatives, focusing on diseases such as malaria, HIV, and polio while also funding vaccine development and distribution.
Trump has met with several prominent business and technology leaders in recent months but has not yet commented on the specifics of his discussions with Gates.
This meeting occurs as Trump prepares to take office again, potentially indicating substantial changes in healthcare policy. Some reports suggest he may consider revisiting his earlier effort to withdraw the United States from the WHO. During his first term, Trump criticized the organization for being overly influenced by China and for its handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Although he initiated the withdrawal process in 2020, President Joe Biden restored the US’s relationship with the WHO on January 20, 2021.
Additionally, Trump has nominated vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for the position of Secretary of Health and Human Services, pending Senate approval. Kennedy has publicly criticized Covid-19 response measures, including lockdowns and rapid vaccine distribution, and has also targeted Gates, accusing him of using “philanthro-capitalism” to influence global health policies.
“He’s gotten control of the World Health Organization so that they mandate vaccines all over the world and the companies that make those vaccines are, Gates’ and many of them the major shareholder,” RFK Jr. stated in interviews while recalling his 2021 book, The Real Anthony Fauci.
