Insights on the New CTTA Chief Wang Liqin: What You Should Know
Wang Liqin, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in table tennis, was elected as the new president of the Chinese Table Tennis Association (CTTA) at the age of 46 on Wednesday. Here’s what you should know about him.

Wang joined the national team in 1993 and excelled in the sport, notably winning the men’s doubles title alongside Yan Sen at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. In 2001, he achieved a significant milestone by capturing the men’s singles, doubles, and team titles at the World Championships. His success continued in 2005 when he secured both the singles and mixed doubles titles at the World Championships. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Wang earned a gold medal in the men’s team event and a bronze in singles.

Throughout his career, Wang amassed 16 world championship titles before retiring from the national team in 2013. Since 2018, he has held the position of vice president of the CTTA. As president, he is committed to ensuring China achieves outstanding results at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

"First of all, I'm still very excited and at the same time quite nervous, because this is indeed a significant responsibility," Wang said. "I will make my contribution through my work and by developing Chinese table tennis. The primary task and responsibility of the Chinese Table Tennis Association is to do a good job in training and preparation. The preparations for the Los Angeles Olympics have already begun. We need to continue to work on Olympic preparations, especially as the table tennis events at the 2028 Games have been adjusted from five gold medals to six. We need to formulate a preparation strategy for these six events."

Chinese Olympic champions Ma Long, Sun Yingsha, and Wang Chuqin shared their expectations for the upcoming Olympics.

"First of all, I would like to thank the General Administration of Sport of China and the Chinese Table Tennis Association for giving me the opportunity to continue to contribute to Chinese table tennis," Ma stated. "I will pay more attention to the development of young athletes and the construction of the reserve team. I have many years of competition and training experience, and I hope to provide more advice to young athletes."

Sun noted, "The new Olympic cycle will bring more challenges and difficulties. Table tennis at the Los Angeles Olympics has added a mixed team event. I think it is both an opportunity and a challenge. I hope that under the leadership of President Wang, Chinese table tennis can continue to achieve great success. I will also do my best to win every match."

Wang Chuqin added, "Whether it was the previous CTTA president or the current one, they were all decided by the General Administration of Sport of China after careful consideration. President Liu resigned due to personal reasons. I think it was the best arrangement. We athletes should all do our jobs well."
