The Russian actor, who received an Oscar nomination for his performance in Sean Baker’s film ‘Anora’, is making waves in Hollywood. At 32, Borisov became the first Russian-born actor to earn a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role in a film that garnered five Oscars and won the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Although he did not win the Academy Award, his standout performance earned him widespread recognition and established him as a rising star. In addition to his Oscar nod, he also received Best Supporting Actor nominations from BAFTA, the Golden Globes, the Gotham Awards, and the Film Independent Spirit Awards.
According to Variety, Borisov's new contract with UTA places him among the agency's diverse roster of high-profile clients, which includes Timothee Chalamet, Chris Pratt, and Benedict Cumberbatch, alongside actresses Cynthia Erivo and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The agency is known for its commitment to representing individuals whose voices and vision “shape culture and drive the future.”
Borisov will still be represented by ColorCreative, Gang, Tyre, Ramer, Brown & Passman, and Sunshine Sachs Morgan & Lylis, as specified by Variety.
In ‘Anora’, which delves into themes of class divides and power dynamics, Borisov portrays Igor, a complex and ruthless henchman. He revealed to Variety that he was the first actor Baker approached for the film, even before the script was finalized. Baker, having seen Borisov’s performance in the Finnish film ‘Compartment No. 6’ at Cannes, reached out to him and said, “we should do his next movie together.” The film ‘Compartment No. 6’ won the Grand Prix at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival and earned Borisov a nomination for Best Actor at the European Film Awards.
Born in December 1992 in Reutov, a suburb of Moscow, Borisov did not come from an acting background. He began his journey in a school theater group and secured a spot at the esteemed Shchepkin Higher Theater School at the age of 16. He showed significant talent early on, winning the Golden Leaf Theater Award at 20, but spent several years in smaller roles before gaining prominence with ‘The Road to Berlin’ in 2015.
His filmography includes other notable projects such as ‘Captain Volkonogov Escaped’, which was nominated for the Golden Lion at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, and ‘Anna K’, Netflix’s only original series produced in Russia.
