Trump suggests Putin might not desire to 'stop the war' in Ukraine
On Saturday, President Donald Trump expressed doubts about whether Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to bring an end to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. This statement served as a pointed warning to Putin and followed Trump's meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome.

“There was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities and towns, over the last few days,” Trump remarked in a post on his social media platform, referencing an attack on Kyiv earlier in the week that resulted in the deaths of at least eight individuals.

“It makes me think that maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war, he’s just tapping me along, and has to be dealt with differently,” he added.

In this post, which marks some of Trump's most overt criticism of Putin, he indicated that the U.S. might contemplate imposing further sanctions on Russia.

These remarks appeared just a day after he asserted that Ukraine and Russia are "very close" to reaching a ceasefire agreement, encouraging both nations to engage in "very high level talks."

Trump and Zelenskyy met at St. Peter’s Basilica during Pope Francis' funeral on Saturday, which the Ukrainian president described as a "good meeting." This encounter represented the first direct interaction between the two leaders since their tense exchange in the Oval Office in February.

“President Trump and President Zelenskyy met privately today and had a very productive discussion. More details about the meeting will follow,” stated White House communications director Steven Cheung.
