Biden Discusses Middle East "peace deal"
US President Joe Biden has emphasized his commitment to pursuing a ceasefire in Gaza, which he believes could deter Iran from launching retaliatory attacks against Israel following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Haniyeh was killed in Tehran on June 31, shortly after the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. In response, Iran has vowed to deliver "harsh punishment" to Israel, which has not confirmed or denied involvement in the incident. In anticipation of potential threats, the US has increased its military presence in the Middle East with additional warships and a submarine.

Addressing the press, Biden remarked that the efforts to secure a ceasefire are becoming increasingly challenging due to recent events, yet he remains determined, stating, "but I am not giving up" on finding a peaceful resolution between Israel and Hamas. He further expressed his anticipation regarding Iran's response, emphasizing, “We will see what Iran does, and we will see what happens if there is any attack.”

Biden also conveyed his expectation that a successful ceasefire could potentially prevent Iranian retaliation, noting, “That is my expectation, but we will see.”

The conversation with Biden also touched on purported media claims that he was pressuring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to refrain from further provocative actions. This inquiry followed closely after Israel admitted to the assassination of Hezbollah senior commander Fuad Shukr. Biden played coy about the specifics of any pressure, saying, “If I told you what pressure I was putting on, it would not be very much pressure, would it?”

Further diplomatic initiatives included a joint call by the US, Egypt, and Qatar for final negotiations between Israel and Hamas, including hostage exchanges, scheduled to take place in Doha. The American team is reportedly led by CIA director Bill Burns, based on information from Axios.

According to reports from Reuters, which cited senior Iranian officials, a ceasefire in Gaza is seen as the only measure capable of preventing a direct Iranian strike on Israel. They indicated that a failure in talks, or any signs of stalling by Netanyahu's administration, could lead to attacks from Iran and Hezbollah.

Despite ongoing negotiations, Iranian officials continue to express their intent to retaliate, as echoed by President Pezeshkian, who affirmed Iran’s "legitimate right" to respond to Israel's actions that go against humanitarian and legal standards.
