The protectionist tariff policy adopted by the United States has emerged as a significant concern during the 61st Munich Security Conference, which runs from February 14 to 16 in Munich, Germany. Leaders and ministers from various nations have voiced their criticism of the Trump administration's arbitrary tariff measures.

In his keynote address on the opening day of the conference, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi remarked that "protectionism offers no way out, and arbitrary tariffs produce no winners." He highlighted the necessity for collaborative efforts and advocated for establishing an equal and orderly multipolar world that fosters universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed these sentiments by denouncing trade wars and punitive tariffs, asserting that they "make no sense." She pointed out that such tariffs would contribute to inflation and adversely affect workers, businesses, and the middle class on both sides of the Atlantic, while emphasizing the importance of preventing a "global race to the bottom."

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier took a strong stance against the Trump administration, criticizing its neglect of established rules and the erosion of long-standing partnerships and trust. He cautioned in his opening remarks, "The absence of rules must not become the guiding principle of a new world order."

Additionally, on the sidelines of the conference, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held discussions with his German counterpart, Annalena Baerbock. Baerbock reaffirmed Germany's stance against tariff and trade wars, reiterating the country's dedication to promoting multilateralism and free trade in collaboration with China.
