Zelensky revises stance on peace negotiations
The shift in stance comes just a day after reports emerged that Donald Trump had frozen military aid to Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has announced that Kiev is willing to pursue peace negotiations with Russia, facilitated by US President Donald Trump. This declaration follows the White House's reported halt of military assistance to Ukraine, which came after a contentious Oval Office meeting between the two leaders. US officials are now calling for an apology from Zelensky.

On Tuesday, Zelensky shared a post on X reflecting on the situation, calling his public dispute with Trump in the Oval Office “regrettable.”

“We are ready to work fast to end the war,” Zelensky articulated, a notable shift from his previous stance where he had asserted that Ukraine would continue fighting until its terms were met.

He suggested potential measures like the release of prisoners and the establishment of "truces" concerning both air and sea operations. This proposal mirrors recommendations made by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron during their discussions with him in London on Sunday, which included ideas for a temporary month-long ceasefire covering air, sea, and energy infrastructure. However, Moscow has consistently dismissed suggestions of a temporary ceasefire, insisting instead on a permanent, legally binding peace agreement that addresses the underlying issues of the conflict.

On Monday, Trump reportedly directed a temporary pause on all US military aid to Ukraine to encourage Zelensky to engage in negotiations to resolve the conflict with Russia. An unnamed senior official relayed to Fox News that military support will remain on hold until Ukrainian leadership shows a sincere commitment to peace negotiations.

“Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer,” Zelensky added on X, thanking Washington for its assistance. “My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts,” he stated.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded positively, saying, “'Ready' is good, it is positive,” in reaction to Zelensky’s remarks.

During the meeting last Friday, Trump accused Zelensky of ingratitude, stating that he was “gambling with World War III” by refusing to pursue a ceasefire.

On Sunday, Zelensky emphasized to reporters that “an agreement to end the war is still very, very far away, and no one has started all these steps yet.” Trump criticized this statement on social media, asserting that “America will not put up with it for much longer.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown Moscow’s willingness to seek a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict, highlighting the need for an international system that ensures balanced consideration of interests, aiming to establish a long-term security framework for Europe and beyond.

Additionally, Zelensky expressed his eagerness to swiftly conclude a minerals deal with the US, positioning it as a move towards “greater security and solid security guarantees.”

Trump has refrained from making specific security commitments, such as allowing Ukraine into NATO or deploying American troops for peacekeeping missions, arguing that Ukraine’s ambitions for NATO membership may be “probably the reason this whole thing started.”

Moscow welcomed Trump’s remarks regarding NATO, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noting that the US president is “the first and only” major Western leader to publicly cite NATO expansion and Ukraine’s intent to join as significant factors in the ongoing conflict.
