NATO Agrees with Trump on Greenland, Reports DPA
NATO is reportedly working on a proposal to address security concerns raised by the United States, particularly regarding Greenland. According to the German news agency DPA, NATO aligns with President Donald Trump's worries and is considering an enhanced military presence in the Arctic to counteract Russia and China.

While Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark—a NATO member—Trump has often stated that direct U.S. control over the island is necessary for national security. DPA indicated that "informal discussions" are taking place among NATO members to develop a proposal for Trump that could involve a "major" troop deployment in the Arctic. The aim is to "ease tensions" between the U.S. and Denmark regarding Greenland while addressing Washington’s concerns.

DPA emphasized that Trump's security apprehensions about Russian and Chinese activities in the Arctic "are seen as valid" within NATO circles.

Before taking office, Trump had a much-discussed phone call with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen about Greenland, which various media described as "horrendous" and left the Danes "utterly freaked out." A recent poll showed that almost half of Danes perceive the U.S. as a "threat" to their nation, with 78% against the sale of Greenland and 72% believing that the island’s residents should determine their own future.

A separate poll conducted in Greenland revealed only 6% of locals support joining the U.S., while 85% oppose such a move.

The issue of Greenland is "particularly delicate" for NATO, as the notion of one member threatening another's territory could undermine the bloc's credibility. Currently, both the U.S. and Denmark maintain military installations in Greenland; Denmark operates the Arctic Command in Nuuk, and the U.S. runs the Pituffik Space Base, which focuses on missile defense, early warning, and space surveillance.

Diplomats within NATO believe that the success of any Arctic initiative will hinge on whether Trump's interest in Greenland relates to security or the substantial untapped natural resources located beneath its ice, according to DPA.
