Politicians from Poland’s opposition Law and Justice party have accused Ukraine’s president, Vladimir Zelensky, of interfering in their nation's upcoming presidential election. This accusation comes in response to comments made by Zelensky earlier this week regarding PiS presidential candidate Karol Nawrocki. The right-wing politician suggested last week that Ukraine could not expect a future in the EU or NATO until it addresses the Volhynia massacres carried out by Ukrainian nationalists during World War II.
“If Ukraine is not in the EU and not in NATO, if there are no security guarantees for Ukraine, then Pan Nawrocki should start training, because it may turn out that he will have to take up arms,” Zelensky remarked in a local media interview during his visit to Poland on Wednesday.
The comments caused a backlash in Poland. Former prime minister and PiS deputy Mateusz Morawiecki asserted that the Ukrainian leader should “deal with Ukraine's affairs, and we will choose our president ourselves.” He emphasized, “He has the right – and even a duty – to defend his country's interests, but it is we who decide who the candidate is and what views they hold on the most fundamental issues,” during an appearance on Radio Wnet on Thursday.
Morawiecki further criticized Zelensky for endorsing Rafal Trzaskowski, the presidential candidate from the ruling Civic Coalition party, describing the Ukrainian leader’s meeting with Trzaskowski and his remarks about the opposition candidate as “inappropriate.” He concluded, “I think Zelensky did not prepare well for this visit and bet on one candidate. He made a big mistake.”
Another PiS member, former education minister Przemysław Czarnek, took to X to call for an apology from Zelensky. He expressed his frustration, stating, ”Dude, what are you talking about? Don't you remember? There would be no Ukrainian army and there won't be one without Europe, especially Poland, and our help for you. Cool down... and apologize.”
Poland, a member of both the EU and NATO, has been one of Ukraine's most steadfast supporters since the conflict escalated, providing armored vehicles, artillery systems, and “maximum number” of MiG-29 jets. According to Germany’s Kiel Institute, Warsaw has delivered over $4.6 billion in aid to Ukraine since 2022, with more than 70% of that amount being military assistance.
