NATO Nation's Prime Minister Commits to Opposing Ukraine's Membership
Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that Ukraine will not be permitted to join NATO while he remains in office, asserting that such a move could trigger a new global conflict. In an interview with STVR on Sunday, he stated, “As long as I am the prime minister of the Slovak Republic, I will lead the legislators, whom I have control over as a party chairman, to never agree to Ukraine’s membership in NATO. Ukraine’s entry into NATO would serve as a good basis for a third world war.”

Fico, known for his opposition to Western military and financial support for Ukraine, advocates for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict and has consistently cautioned against escalating tensions with Moscow.

NATO's expansion requires the approval of all 32 current members, which includes individual votes from national parliaments on prospective new members.

Ukraine formally applied for NATO membership in September 2022, driven by the ongoing war with Russia. Although numerous Western nations have shown support for Ukraine’s aspirations, they have yet to offer a specific timeline or concrete pathway for its accession. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged in July that “we will not be in NATO until the war is over in Ukraine.”

Russia perceives NATO’s eastward expansion as a security concern and has pointed to Ukraine's connection with the alliance as a key factor in the ongoing conflict. Moreover, President Vladimir Putin warned last month that the use of Western-supplied longer-range weapons for strikes deep within Russian territory would be equivalent to NATO’s direct involvement in the conflict.
