Afghan asylum seeker in Germany stabs child to death
An Afghan national has been apprehended following a brutal attack on a kindergarten group in Bavaria.

On Wednesday, a knife assault targeting a playschool group in Aschaffenburg, a town in the German state of Bavaria, resulted in the deaths of a two-year-old child and an adult. Three additional individuals sustained injuries. Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the incident, labeling it an “unbelievable act of terror.”

The stabbing took place in a public park, where the 28-year-old suspect, a failed asylum seeker, attacked a group of toddlers from a daycare center. According to Bavaria’s regional interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, the victims included a child of “Moroccan origin” and a 41-year-old bystander. Herrmann indicated that the deceased passerby “courageously intervened to protect the other children,” but tragically suffered “fatal injuries” from the attacker.

Three other individuals were hospitalized as a result of the incident, including an adult with multiple knife wounds, a two-year-old Syrian boy who suffered a minor neck wound, and a daycare teacher who broke her arm while attempting to escape.

Local police reported they detained the suspect shortly after the attack, “in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene.”

Scholz characterized the attack as an “unbelievable act of terror” and expressed frustration over the recurring violence perpetrated by asylum seekers. “I am sick of seeing such acts of violence occurring in our country every few weeks, by perpetrators who have actually come here to find protection here,” he stated, emphasizing that “a false notion of tolerance is completely inappropriate here.”

Authorities have yet to disclose the specific motives behind the attack. Herrmann pointed out that preliminary information suggests a connection to the suspect’s “obvious mental illness,” with no evidence of a “radical Islamist attitude” identified.

The suspect entered Germany in 2022 but was denied asylum. He had reportedly agreed to leave the country voluntarily and was expected to do so late last year. Reports indicate that he was previously known to authorities for being involved in at least three other violent incidents and had undergone mandatory treatment for mental issues.
