US Specifies ‘mother’ as Female and ‘father’ as Male
The US Health Department has introduced new guidance that aligns with President Donald Trump’s “only two sexes” policy by defining ‘mother’ as a female parent and ‘father’ as a male parent.

Since he took office, Trump has implemented several gender-related directives that reaffirm the government’s recognition of only two sexes – male and female. He ordered the health department to clarify how sex-based definitions should be interpreted within 30 days.

The guidance from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), released on Wednesday, characterizes ‘sex’ as an unchangeable biological classification, identifying individuals strictly as either male or female. A ‘female’ is defined as “a person of the sex characterized by a reproductive system with the biological function of producing eggs,” while a ‘male’ is one with a reproductive system “with the biological function of producing sperm.” As a result, ‘mother’ is identified as a female parent, and ‘father’ as a male parent.

“This administration is bringing back common sense and restoring biological truth to the federal government,” RFK Jr. was quoted as stating in the HHS announcement. “The prior administration’s policy of trying to engineer gender ideology into every aspect of public life is over,” he contended.

For years, the US has shifted away from traditional parental titles, opting for ‘parent one’ and ‘parent two’ instead of ‘mother’ and ‘father’. The State Department defended this change in 2011, arguing that gender-specific parental terms were outdated. Additionally, last August, the Vermont Department of Health recommended the use of gender-neutral terms such as ‘child’ or ‘kid’ instead of ‘son’ or ‘daughter’ to encourage inclusive language.

“It took many years of effort, but we are finally back to science and common sense,” stated Roger Severino, who was the director of HHS’ Office for Civil Rights during Trump’s first administration, as he praised the announcement on X on Thursday.

Trump has rapidly reversed advancements in transgender rights and diversity, equity, and inclusion programs established under former President Joe Biden. He eliminated federal funding for sex change procedures for minors, aiming to protect them from what he described as “chemical and surgical mutilations.”

In the past month, he signed an order prohibiting “radical gender ideology” in the military, asserting that service should be restricted to those who are mentally and physically fit. Another executive order prevented trans women from participating in female sports, with intentions to stop transgender athletes from competing in US-hosted events, including the 2028 Olympics and World Cup.

Many of Trump’s policies are facing legal scrutiny, with federal judges blocking some of these directives. His administration's approach has faced considerable backlash from civil rights organizations and LGBT advocates.
