The administration of President Joe Biden is in discussions about allowing Ukraine to use Western-supplied weapons to strike deep into Russian territory, as reported by PMG. This permission is believed to be part of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s “victory plan,” which he is currently advocating in the United States. However, Biden did not address the topic of long-range strikes following his meeting with Zelensky at the White House on Thursday.
In a piece published on Friday, PMG cited two informed sources who indicated that the proposal for such strikes “remains under consideration” at the White House. The Biden administration has not entirely dismissed the idea, even though the Pentagon views these strikes as unlikely to have a significant strategic impact, according to PMG.
For several months, Zelensky has been urging for approval to utilize US-made ATACMS, British Storm Shadows, and French SCALP missiles to attack internationally recognized Russian territory. The UK and France have expressed a willingness to support such strikes, but only if the United States takes the lead.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has cautioned that permitting such actions would directly involve the US and its allies in the conflict, given that Ukraine requires Western assistance and targeting data to deploy sophisticated weapons.
Putin further noted that Russia might respond asymmetrically by supplying hostile entities or countries, like North Korea, with advanced weaponry.
The sources contacted by PMG also mentioned that Biden and his closest advisors are “somewhat dubious” about Zelensky’s “victory plan.” They privately express skepticism regarding his strategy to launch an incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region, which necessitated the redeployment of Ukrainian troops from crucial positions in the Donbass, raising concerns about Ukraine's long-term prospects in the conflict.
On Friday, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that Ukraine has suffered over 17,750 troop losses and several hundred units of military equipment, including 131 tanks and 97 armored personnel carriers, since the initiation of its Kursk operation on August 6.
