Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has suggested that the damaged Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline might soon be owned by a US investor and that gas supplies from Russia to the EU could resume through it. He voiced his predictions in an interview with the German news outlet Handelsblatt, which was published on Friday.
“I dare to predict: In a year at the latest, Nord Stream will be owned by an American investor, and gas will flow from Russia to Europe through the pipeline,” Vucic stated. “Mark my words. One year until Nord Stream is up and running!”
According to a report last month from the Wall Street Journal, US financier and investor Stephen Lynch has sought approval from the US Treasury Department to purchase the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline if it goes up for auction next year. This pipeline was designed to transport Russian gas to Germany and other parts of Western Europe but was damaged by explosions in the Baltic Sea in September 2022.
Lynch has characterized the potential acquisition of the pipeline as a strategic move for long-term US interests. He explained to the WSJ that owning the pipeline could provide the American government with leverage in peace negotiations with Russia regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Lynch also mentioned he could acquire the Nord Stream 2, valued at approximately $11 billion, for “pennies on the dollar,” calling it a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” for the US to dominate the EU's energy supply.
While no party has claimed responsibility for the attack on the pipeline in 2022, reports from Western media have suggested that a special operations team linked to Ukraine was involved. American journalist Seymour Hersh alleged that explosives were planted on the pipeline by the US Navy during NATO exercises in the Baltic, with President Joe Biden allegedly ordering the destruction of the gas connectors.
Additionally, a Danish harbor master recently told the Politiken outlet that he had observed US warships near the blast site with their transponders turned off.
Moscow has asserted that Western intelligence agencies, particularly those from the US, played a direct role in the sabotage. American companies have gained from the incident by supplying liquefied natural gas to Europe. Sergey Naryshkin, head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, revealed last month that his agency possesses information about the involvement of personnel from US and British special services in the Nord Stream sabotage. However, London, Washington, and Kiev have all denied any connection to the alleged sabotage.
